Quality German Beer in Africa

Where German beer, food & culture meets African Hospitality.
Brauhaus Afrika is a brewery, restaurant & trading post combining the craftsmanship and passion of German beer & food with freedom & the magnificent spirit of Afrika.
All our beers are strictly brewed according to the Bavarian “Reinheitsgebot” of 1516. It is the oldest cuisine and beverage law in the world. This law states that only water, barley malt and hops may be used to produce beer. Yeast had yet to be discovered.

Some interesting facts about coffee roasting a Brauhaus.
Estate coffee, as the name indicates, typically comes from a single farm and is homogeneous and consistent.
We however like to use smallholder coffee from East Africa. These smallholder famers farm anything from 10 - 100 coffee trees, often accross a larger region. All the harvested coffee gets sent to a central co-operative where it is graded and bagged.
This complexity makes for an equally interesting cup. Once in a while a stray maize finds its way into our coffee, making for a most intensely coffee flaovoured popcorn snack for the roaster! ...

We are smoking .....COLD!
German meat is nothing without that special smokey taste - and we acquire that taste by cold smoking most of our products. While most industrial meat suppliers use "liquid smoke" to give their products a smokey flavour, we prefer the old school natural way.
A fire is made with dried corn cobs, we then "smother" the fire so that the cobs only smoulder and place it into our custom built smoker. Most products are smoked over a 2 day period - also giving them their special colours.
If you see smoke coming from our chimney - there was definitely a fire! On special days the smell also fills the restaurant adding to the atmosphere.
Our smoked products are both used in the restaurant in some of the dishes and sold in the shop.

Märzen is the German word for “March”!
Beer is a natural product and spoils in the heat!
That is why brewing in summer in Germany was banned from 1539 onwards and brewing was only allowed from September to April.
Märzen beer, however, was brewed especially strong to make it last longer over the summer. The beer was also stored in deep, cool cellars, above which chestnut trees provided shade.
From the summer of 1812, beer was allowed to be
served above these cellars: the beer garden was born!

Beer Facts - 2
“NOT ALL BEER IS THE SAME
Hops, barley and malt produce countless types of beer including: pale, dark, strong Bock, wheat beer, and Märzen.
The roasting level of the malt determines the beer colour, making it pale and light or dark and intense.
The bottom-fermenting yeast of these beers ferments only at cold temperatures. For this reason, brewing in summer used to be banned in Germany.
Wheat beer is top-fermented. The dukes in Germany had a monopoly on its production until 1798.”
